H.O. Smith Arboretum
Designed by Pashek + MTR, this space opened in 2009 in the heart of Penn State University.
Sustainable Materials for Biodiversity
H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens was the first phase of the Arboretum at Penn State. This large, high-profile site features a spectacular diversity of plant material with a wide array of water requirements. As a result, the WC3 team relied on a two-wire irrigation control system with automatic ET adjustment. The flexibility of two-wire control allows independent zoning of many small, unique planting areas which in turn prevents over or under watering. The efficient irrigation design is a part of the LEED Silver certified site which also consists of native plants, artful rainwater design, green infrastructure, and uses sustainable materials.
